I believe the children are our future. Just maybe not this particular child…
A blindfolded teen crashed her car into another vehicle last week while doing the “Bird Box challenge.”
Popular on social media, the dare requires people to blindfold themselves—like the characters in Netflix’s post-apocalyptic film—while doing everyday activities.
Based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name, Bird Box follows a woman (Sandra Bullock) and two children who must keep their eyes covered to avoid supernatural entities that cause people who see them to die by suicide.
What began as a sanctioned challenge in which Twitch streamers played video games blindfolded has turned into a global Internet meme. In response, Netflix has released warnings to customers, urging them to stay safe.
“We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl [the movie’s unnamed children] have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes,” the streaming service tweeted early this month.
A 17-year-old in Utah, should have listened to that advice before she pulled a hat over her eyes while driving on Layton Parkway.
“She ended up losing control of her car and skidded into the westbound lanes … and hit another car and ended up hitting a light pole as well,” Layton Police Lt. Travis Lyman told CNN affiliate KSL.
No injuries were reported; the teen, driving a pickup truck, and her 16-year-old passenger have not yet been identified.

Colorado police are taking precautions against similar incidents, warning drivers in advance.
“Inevitably, somebody’s going to do the monumentally stupid thing that is driving while blindfolded,” a State Patrol officer said in a video message. “We shouldn’t have to say this, but we’re gonna: Don’t drive blindfolded.”
