A man was killed in a hit-and-run in New Milford on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The victim was struck at 6:20 a.m. in the area of Henley Avenue and Cherry Street, borough police said Thursday on their Facebook page.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office confirmed the victim's death. His identification was not released.

Those who lived near the scene mostly described the neighborhood as quiet, but not without the occasional traffic issue.

"We don't feel unsafe because of traffic or otherwise," Peter Wang said.

Wang lived on Cherry Street for about five years and said he had seen the victim before, though he did not know him well. Wang described him as an older man.

"He's always walking in the neighborhood for exercise," Wang said.

Jacques Baliant said the intersection can be busy during the day.

"Nobody wants to stop and let you out," Baliant, a 10-year resident of Cherry Street, said of trying to turn onto Henley.

Rafael Batista, a 24-year resident of Cherry, said he sees some accidents farther down the road near Boulevard but not by Henley.

"I never saw anything happen like this before," Batista said.

An electric sign near the scene announced the time of the hit-and-run and contact information for the New Milford Police Department.

The death is the latest in a series of pedestrian fatalities in North Jersey. A man was struck and killed in Elmwood Park last week. At least eight pedestrians were killed in September.

Gerald Esquioja, who lives on the corner of the two roads in New Milford, said it was scary to hear about the death so close to home. He said he hopes authorities find answers.

"I understand they're scared," Esquioja said of the driver, "but there's no need to run."

If anyone has information about the incident, borough police ask to contact them at 201-261-1400.
