Man Killed In Fiery Oswego County Crash Was About To Become A Father, Family Says

ALBION, N.Y. -- Bobby Baker III couldn’t wait to become a father in a few weeks, his family said.

His fiance is due to deliver his son, Bobby Baker IV, on Valentine’s Day. The couple recently moved to an apartment in Pulaski and Baker started working a new job three months ago as a machine operator.

“He felt so proud that he was taking care of his family,” said his mother, Paula Schramm. “He was the happiest he’s ever been in his life.”

Baker, 25, was killed Tuesday when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree on state Route 13 in the town of Albion, according to New York State Police. Baker’s 2004 Ford Explorer burst into flames and he was trapped inside.

The crash happened at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday when many accidents were reported across the region due to icy, snowy roads.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and state police have not released the identify of the driver who died in the fire. The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to verify the driver’s identity and determine an official cause of death. Schramm confirmed that it was her son who died.

Baker was Schramm’s first child, but she called him her baby and her “peanut," a nickname that he earned as a premature baby that stuck with him throughout his life.

Baker was raised in the Syracuse area. He attended Henninger High School and graduated from the Sidney Johnson Center, a vocational program in the Syracuse City School District. He was employed by International Wire Group, Inc. in Williamstown. Baker was headed home from work when the crash occurred, his fiance, Kali Bennett said.

Baker and Bennett have been best friends for nine years and they’ve been dating for about a year, she said.

“We just fell in love,” Bennett said. “Bobby is the only one I’ve been able to go to and talk to, no matter. We were always there for each other.”

Baker’s family will remember him for his unconditional love for people.

“His laugh and smile were contagious,” his mother said.

Schramm said her son was “unique" and that he saw the good in people and he always wanted to help others.

“He loved God,” she said. “He found his faith.”

Schramm said she’ll stay with Bennett in Pulaski to help her when the baby arrives. The baby will be Schramm’s first grandchild.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help Bennett and the baby. Schramm said she’s grateful for the outpouring of support from the community.

Bennett said she’ll tell her son how much Baker loved him.

“I’ll tell him that his father loved him unconditionally,” Bennett said. “Bobby would have been an amazing father.”

In addition to his fiance, Baker is survived by his parents, Schramm and Bobby Baker, Jr., and seven brothers and one sister. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Carter Funeral Home, 1604 Grant Boulevard, with a service to follow. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester.
