Amir Nasrabadi, the former animation exec at Illumination Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Pixar, has been named executive vp and general manager of DHX Media's Vancouver animation studio.
Los Angeles-based Nasrabadi, who helped steer Illumination through the release of films including Minions, Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, Sing and The Grinch as executive vp finance and operations, will join Halifax-based DHX Media on June 10, and report to president Josh Scherba.
Nasrabadi will oversee all animation production at the DHX studio, which along with its subsidiary Peanuts Worldwide, is set to produce for Apple's upcoming streaming platform original Peanuts content based on creator Charles M. Schulz's popular gang of characters. The Canada-based kids programming giant acquired a stake in the Peanuts franchise in 2017.
DHX is also known for its Teletubbies, Strawberry Shortcake, Caillou, Inspector Gadget and Degrassi franchises. The animation studio's slate, aimed at preschool and action-adventure audiences, includes Mega Man: Fully Charged, Polly Pocket, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: The Series, Chip and Potato, Carmen Sandiego, Bob the Builder and The Deep.
Nasrabadi also worked with The Walt Disney Studios for 10 years. “We believe Amir’s history as head of Pixar Canada in Vancouver, as well as his time in management with Illumination, Paramount and Disney will deliver tremendous value to our business. We couldn’t be more delighted that Amir is coming back to Vancouver, and we look forward to welcoming him to the DHX Media team," Scherba said in a statement.
Nasrabadi added he will be bringing his mini-dachshund Dot to the DHX Media animation studio as it's a dog-friendly workspace. “Vancouver is such a fantastic city for animation and I am thrilled to be joining DHX Media to be part of the exciting work being done at their world-class studio," he said in his own statement.
