High Speed Chase On I 680 From Concord To Danville Ends In Crash

A Concord man suffered major injuries in a car crash after allegedly leading officers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 680 on Tuesday night, police said.

The chase, which started just before 10:30 p.m., ended with the car on its roof and the driver in critical condition, Concord police Lt. David Hughes said. Police identified the driver as 19-year-old Michael Holden.

According to Hughes, a patrol sergeant saw a car driving recklessly and tried to pull it over near the I-680 onramp on Monument Boulevard in Concord. The sergeant tried to pull over the car only to watch it take off and get on the southbound direction of the freeway, accelerating to speeds of 100 mph as police pursued it, Hughes said.

The car lost control about 10 miles into the chase just north of El Cerro Boulevard, Hughes said, striking a guardrail and overturning near La Gonda Way in Danville.

An ambulance took Holden to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday morning. Police said Holden was not ejected from the vehicle.

Hughes said the car Holden was driving was stolen out of Walnut Creek.

The California Highway Patrol issued a severe traffic alert after the wreck and shut down two lanes on southbound I-680 between El Cerro Boulevard and El Pintado Road, as well as the El Pintado Road offramp. The lanes and onramp were reopened around 5:30 a.m., according to the CHP.

The CHP, Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office crime lab and Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office all were jointly investigating the incident, which Hughes said is the normal protocol when a driver in a high-speed chase is critically injured.

Anyone who may have witnessed the chase or who has information on Holden is urged to call Concord police Detective Tom Parodi at 925-603-5867. Anonymous tips may be left at 925-603-5836.
