This spring break, set your sights wide and take your family overseas, suggests Amy Norman, co-founder of Little Passports, a monthly subscription service that sends children educational packages and souvenirs from around the world. She says international travel is not only educational for kids, but also sparks their curiosity and can make them global citizens. “It makes them excited about differences and gives them perspective on their own country.” She shares some favorite countries for family travel with Larry Bleiberg for USA TODAY.

    England

The United Kingdom makes an ideal place for kids to get their first passport stamp, says Norman. The country is packed with child-friendly sites, and children will enjoy the accents and the royal history. “I like to get the kids out of London and into the countryside where they can run around in castles, which is magical. They’re learning and they’re having fun. It’s a very easy first country.” >visitbritain.com

      Chile

Santiago, the capital of this South American country, is packed with children’s museums and parks, Norman says. And that’s just the start. In the south, Patagonia has stunning mountains and parks, while the northern Atacama desert offers a chance to hike, sandboard and stargaze. “You can really have an incredible adventure outside.” >chile.travel/en

      Canada

No need to take a transoceanic flight to have an international experience, Norman says. She recommends exploring the beauty of Vancouver on Canada’s West Coast, and experiencing the French influences in Montreal in the east. “You can revel in the differences. Kids learn you need a passport, that there is a different currency and the police are called Mounties,” she says. “International travel doesn’t have to be expensive. These are trips you can drive to.” >us-keepexploring.canada.travel

      Italy

Even picky eaters will love visiting the home of pizza, pasta and gelato. Plus there are beaches and town squares, where kids can run around. Although it can get crowded, Norman says her children didn’t mind lining up for Rome’s Colosseum because she had scheduled a gladiator fighting class after the tour. “There are so many ways to enjoy the country.” >italia.it/en/home.html

          Japan

For a true adventure, Norman recommends visiting Tokyo, which provides endless opportunities for new experiences. She also took her children to mountain villages and to Hiroshima, where they learned about the atomic bomb. She says her kids signed up for a class on Japanese taiko drumming, and loved going to a workshop where they got to make the plastic food models that restaurants use to show what’s on their menu. “I wanted them to see how different Japanese culture is,” she says. >japan.travel/en

          France

Kids can get overwhelmed by historic sites, which is why Norman took her family on a croissant scavenger hunt when they visited Paris, tasting buttery pastries across the capital city. “I like to mix up our traditional sightseeing — without taking a forced march through a lot of museums,” she says. >ee.france.fr
