Fair Lawn NJ Boy Hit And Killed By Bergen County Sheriff's Office Car

UPDATE: Fair Lawn school district releases statement on 12-year-old student's death

A 12-year-old Fair Lawn boy was fatally struck by a car from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office on Sunday, authorities said. 

At about 9:08 p.m., the victim was hit while attempting to cross Route 208, said Sheriff Anthony Cureton, in a statement. The boy had been walking with his brother and two of their friends when he was hit on Route 208 south, near Fair Lawn Avenue, said police Sgt. Brian Metzler.

As of Monday morning, the boy's name had not been released. In a statement, the Fair Lawn public school district confirmed that the boy was a student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, but did not immediately identify him.

The officer driving the car, identified as Michael Sansevere, was taken to a local hospital. It was unclear what injuries Sansevere had sustained. 

"He's an exceptional officer," said Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton, who went to the scene. "Right now, my prayers go to him and the family of the young man who died."

Sansevere, who has been at the Sheriff's Office for 12 years and is assigned to the K-9 unit, was patrolling Route 208, Cureton said. 

Route 208 south was expected to be closed at Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn through the night, Metzler said. 

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident.
