The search warrant application said a witness told police they heard the gunshots and initially thought Vessel had committed suicide. The witness also told police that Vessel had been violent in the past and threatened to kill people when he drank or did not take his medication.

Another neighbor told police that Vessel was a former Marine and had PTSD and "other violent mental issues," according to the search warrant application.
