Bugatti Just Built One Car That Sold For $18.7 Million—the Most Expensive Car In Its 110 Year History

Bugatti is famous for producing some of the most expensive cars in the world, including the $1.1 million Veyron, the $3.2 million Chiron, and the $5 million Divo. This year, the ultra-exclusive French automaker is celebrating its 110th anniversary. And, in order to place a properly extortionate spin on this commemoration, it has created a new one-off show car, La Voiture Noire. According to Frank Heyl, the brand’s head of exterior design, the car was sold to an unnamed customer, who bought it “without even asking for the price.” But we asked. For the record, the price was $12.3 million before tax, $18.7 million after tax.

This menacing concept vehicle, which made its public debut at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this spring, was on display this past weekend on the lawn of the tony Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como in Italy, where it was constantly surrounded by ogling passersby. And rightfully so: It looks less like a passenger car and more like a carnivorous interstellar space shark. This outré appearance is intentional, as its uniqueness is not only its core selling point—there will only be one made, to be delivered to the lucky owner in late 2021—but is also meant as a calling card for a new individual service the brand will be offering.

The French automaker is making only one of La Voiture Noire.

“We’re now moving into creating our own coach-building operation in house,” Heyl says, referring to a practice from the early and mid–20th century, where an automaker would construct a power train (engine and transmission) and chassis (a car’s underpinnings), and then a wealthy customer would have an independent shop produce a made-to-order body. “People already considered Bugatti at the pinnacle of the automotive pyramid. Now we just made another top on top of that.”

La Voiture Noire has a similar design to Bugatti's iconic Type 57S Atlantic from the 1930s.
