3 Dead After Fire Breaks Out At Springfield Apartment Building

UPDATE @ 3:20 p.m.: 

A Springfield police officer driving in the area spotted smoke coming from an apartment and knocked on doors to get people out, according to officials.

One person was asleep inside the apartment but woke up to the knocking and was able to get out, officials said.

The victim, who was not identified, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

One person was rescued and transported to an area hospital after a fire broke out in a Springfield apartment, according to our crew on the scene. 

The condition of the victim was not immediately known.

The fire is under control and crews are investigating. 

Emergency crews are blocking both directions of East John Street west of Selma Road.

FIRST REPORT

Firefighters have responded to reports of a fire in an apartment building on East John Street in Springfield, according to emergency scanner traffic. 

Crews responded to the 800 block of East John Street, near Selma Road, around 2:10 p.m. and reported smoke coming from the roof of the structure.

Emergency scanner traffic indicates police were at the building and requested the fire department respond. 

One person has been transported from the scene by medics, but it was unknown if they were rescued by firefighters.
